Summer Float Series 2008

"Dance of the Waters" - Wednesday, July 2
Enjoy a night of Native American history and culture on the river, as Shoshone storyteller Willie LeClair visits from the Wind River Reservation to talk about native ways. The river takes its name from the Shoshone tribe, which was given the nickname "Snakes" by early trappers. Ken Thomasma, author of The Truth about Sacajawea, also will participate.

Grand Teton Lodge Co., Solitude Float Trips and Barker-Ewing Scenic Trips will take guests on a 10-mile trip through the wildlife-rich channels of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park. Bald eagles, elk, moose and beaver are among the animals commonly spotted along this stretch. Dinner and presentations will precede the float trip.

Guests will meet at 4 p.m. at the float trip parking area across from the Moose Visitor Center.

Registration: $100 Adults/$50 kids (under 14)


"Legends of the Snake" - Friday, July 18
The centerpiece of the Summer Float Series returns with many of the pioneers of rafting and fly fishing on the Snake River. Frank Ewing, Jack Dennis, Denny Becker, Dave Hansen and Bill Guheen are among the legends who will help guide for this historic night on the Snake. Drinks and dinner will be served at the Barker-Ewing camp at Pine Creek.

Guests will float 8 miles from Pritchard Creek to West Table in the Snake River Canyon. After dinner, boats will ferry passengers across the river before dark. Meet at 3 p.m. at the Barker-Ewing office in the Hillside Building, 945 W. Broadway (beneath Sidewinders Tavern).

Barker-Ewing, Dave Hansen Whitewater and Lewis & Clark Expeditions will provide boats, and guests also will have option of a half-day fly fishing trip with Paul Bruun, John Simms or Jack Dennis.

Registration: $150 Adults/$1200 for an entire boat/$500 fishing


"Evening with the Eagles" - Wednesday, July 30
Wyoming Game and Fish biologist Susan Patla will discuss the amazing recovery of America's national bird, as well as other raptors that live and hunt along the Snake. This stretch of river boasts Wyoming's highest concentration of eagles, with six active nests. Geologist Jason Rolfe will talk about the forces that have shaped Jackson Hole over the millennia. Noted birder and author Bert Raynes also will participate, health permitting.

Guests will float approximately 7 miles in wooden dories from A.J. DeRosa's Wooden Boat Tours. Cocktails and food will be served at DeRosa's tipi camp by the river. Meet at Stilson Parking Lot (corner of Highways 390 and 22) at 5 p.m.

"Gliding by the Oxbow" - Friday, Aug. 15
Paddle the gentle stretch of the Snake from Jackson Lake Dam to Pacific Creek in Grand Teton National Park. Biologists and naturalists will be on hand to interpret the wildlife and ecology along the river and the adjacent wetlands. Moose, pelicans, otters, eagles and bears are some of the animals that visit this picturesque part of the Snake. The trips will be led by renowned kayaker Aaron Pruzan.

A light dinner will be served near the Cattleman's Bridge area. Guests will have their choice of paddling canoes or recreational touring kayaks from Rendezvous River Sports. Meet in town (location TBD) at 3 p.m.

Registration: $100 per person
