The Summit will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration begins at 8:30. Speakers include Joe Starinchak of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, founder of the national Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! campaign; Tom Hicks, executive director of the Headwaters Institute; and Wyoming State Climatologist Stephen Gray. In all there will be a dozen lectures, covering all aspects of river ecology and river running history.

Cost is $25, which includes light breakfast and lunch. There will be a raffle with prizes from Patagonia, Cloudveil, Westbank Anglers, High Country Flies, WorldCast Anglers, Rendezvous River Sports, Snake River Kayak & Canoe, Tom Mangelesen, Barker-Ewing River Trips, Lewis and Clark Boat Trips, Mountain Khakis, NewWest Knife Works and more.

Following the Summit, the Snake River Fund will present seven short films from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Varying in length from five to 53 minutes, the films cover Western water usage, a trip by Jackson Hole guides fishing for taimen in Mongolia and an epic hatch on the Gunnison in Colorado.

The two featured films are “Nomads: Wandering Women of the Whitewater Tribe,” a documentary about a trip to the White Nile in Uganda, and “A Glorious Way to Die: Whitewater Rafting in Siberia,” about a brotherhood of Russian rafters who honor their friends lost on the river.

Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. Free pizza and dessert will be served. There will be a cash bar and more raffle prizes.

Sunday, June 1, is River Cleanup Day. Volunteers are needed to assist the eight whitewater rafting outfitters in picking up litter from Wilson to Sheep Gulch. Meet at the Mad River boathouse, 1255 S. Highway 89, at 8:30 a.m. Bagels will be served. Those without boats may clean up ramps and roads.

Film Festival

3 Films from the Drake's 2006 Fly Fishing Video Awards:
  • "Running with the Man": A 5 minute short about angling for Rooster Fish in Baja. Fantastic!
  • "End of the Road": a 5 minute short about local Jackson Hole guides angling for Taimen in Mongolia.
  • "Angling Addiction" : a 5 minute short about "why fish?"

  • "Against the Current" : produced in association with Trout Unlimited, 18 minutes

In the West, ranchers often say, "Whiskey's for drinkin' and water's for fightin'." The competition for water in the arid West has long been a fact of life for ranchers and farmers, but growing towns, sustained drought and climate change are putting new pressures on dwindling water supplies. "Against the Current" underscores the importance of healthy rivers and streams. Told through the wisdom of four people: two ranchers, a biologist and an environmental lawyer, this film tells the story of a rancher who, after 70 years, restored water to the stream that feeds his ranch.

  • "The Hatch": (17 minutes)

Once a year, an epic stonefly hatch invades the Gunnison River Gorge, sending tingles down the spine of every trout and every angler in Colorado's Black Canyon National Park. This film is our salute to this extraordinary place and the people who are fighting for its future as a unique ecosystem.

"The Hatch" premiered at the Telluride Mountain Film Festival in 2005 and toured the U.S. and internationally as part of the Best of Telluride Mountain Film Tour. The film also showed at the Vail Symposium, NYC Gotham Shorts Festival (winner Best Documentary), and the Banff Mountain Film Festival.

  • "A Glorious Way to Die- Whitewater Rafting in Siberia": (52 minutes)

This high-adventure documentary takes us to the treacherous rapids and canyons of central Siberia, where rivers that claim more than 50 lives every year. Rafting has never been captured on film like this before. This is the story of a brotherhood of rafters who take this dangerous journey to honor their friends who died the previous year on these same rapids. The film covers the whole journey, giving us an insight into one of the Siberian team member's lives and how he and his family have lived in Siberia under Communism and also the new Russia. There is also excellent footage of the construction of rafts, dry tops, PFDs, and other whitewater gear from partially recycled materials. The documentary is a multi-international award winner, winning eight awards in seven countries:

Best Film, Alpin Film Festival, US.
    Grand Prix, Poprad Autrans, France
    Special Jury Commendation, Graz, Austria
Best Film on Mountain Sports, Banff Festival of Mountain Films, Canada
Best Film Grand Prix, Poprad , Slovakia
Best Film on Mountain Sports, International Festival of Mountaineering Films (The Czech Republic)
The Mountain Spirit Award, Telluride Mountain Film Festival, USA
Special Award from Students' Jury, Trento, Italy

  • "Nomads: Wandering Women of the Whitewater Tribe": (20 minutes) A Documentary Film by Polly Green and Chris Emerick

Nomad kayakers Whitney Lonsdale, Jessie Stone and Emily Jackson are adventurous women who have been drawn to the whitewater of the White Nile River in Uganda. They are friends connected by their love of the river and their compassion for helping others. They traveled to Africa to pursue their passion for kayaking and found a way to give back to the village that housed them by building a sustainable youth art education center and medical clinic, and refurbishing a school. "Nomads" looks into the lives of these women and the challenges they face.

"Nomads" has been an official selection in more than ten film festivals around the world and has won the following awards:
Best Paddling Documentary- Reel Film Festival, Ontario, Canada
Best of the Fest in Social Action/Adventure- Tahoe/Reno International Film Festival
Best documentary Action/Cut Short Film Competition- Studio City, California
Finalist for best film on Mountain Culture and Environment- Wanaka Mountain Film Festival, New Zealand
